The Eighth Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion was held in Vienna, Austria, and was organized by the Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society at the University of Vienna.

​

The overarching theme of the conference was “Religion and Socio-Cultural Transformation: European Perspectives and Beyond", and 6 keynote lectures were invited to speak about the topic from their original point of view: Franz Fischler (Former EU Commissioner and President of the European Forum Alpbach), Grace Davie (Emeritus Professor at the University of Exeter), Isabella Guanzini (Professor at the Catholic Private University of Linz), Rik Torfs (Emeritus Professor at KU Leuven), Tariq Modood (Professor at the University of Bristol), Hans Schelkshorn (Professor at the University of Vienna)

 

The conference registered 1180 participants in total, of which 1152 speakers who presented their work in one of the 218 panels.​
